SUSTAINABLE LIVING - FOOD
BY MAKAI
- Would growing our own food help solve some problems related to oil consumption?
- If everyone were to grow food for themselves, It could solve some problems, but not many. First of all, it is very unrealistic to think that everyone will even be able to grow their own food, plus, the amount of land needed to grow enough food for even one person, would be to expensive for a lot of people. And furthermore, not everyone would want or be capable of that level of farming.
- Is humankind capable of growing enough food to survive without oil?
- Supposedly it should take a few acres of land to grow enough food to keep one person living. That doesn't mention places to store the food, and what you would do in the winter, when many things won't grow. In the end, we would probably end up falling back into buying from a company that grows everything
- Local CSA - examples of successful models pros/cons
1.Local CSAs are great ways of having less dependance on big multy billion dollar corporal farms. CSA stands for Comunity Shared Agricultur. A local farm will sell their crops to the comunity, in doing so, people have better food that's better for them. There is a very succesfull farm that does just this, right here in Santa Cruz county. Their name is Free Wheelin' Farms, and every year they put out, on average, 100 CSAs (or shares). Just think how much natural farming we would have if many more people got on board with CSAs!
